I say, get the hell out of your “cozy” shoebox of an apartment and get your ass out there!  One of the goals of this site will be to share great ideas for meeting new people and having fun in the process.  You know, like out in the real world?  Here’s one for the men and the women.  (Rob will work on this series for the other team.)

Ladies, how about joining a sports team?  There are  two popular NYC Social Sports Leagues. The good thing about these leagues is that you do not have to be a gifted athlete to play. Most of the games are very laid back, non-competitive, and center more along the social side than the sports side.  Just look at the list of available sports: dodgeball, kickball, broomball, ultimate frisbee, Wiffleball!  It’s about fun and getting out of the goddammed house!  There are plenty of men, many of which are single, and a scarcity of women. Think about that! Picture yourself being like one of, say, four girls on a squad with nine dudes vying for your attention during and after the games at the bar when everyone goes to have a drink after the game. Sound good? Uh, yea. It is. That’s why I’m writing this.  The atmosphere is a positive one where people want to win and have fun and you’ll find people being supportive of each other and how great is that for getting to know new people?  There are two major social sports leagues in the city and I have participated in them both. For the single guys trying to meet ladies, take an acting class. You’re wondering, “that’s it?”. Yes. That’s it.  I’ve taken about a dozen acting classes since I moved to New York City five years ago and the women regularly outnumber the men 2 to 1 in just about any acting class you can take.   You’re probably wondering, “well don’t I have to be an actor to take acting classes?”  Nope, that’s the point of the class!  By taking class, you’re already letting the world know, “Hey man, I’m learning”, and in a class environment, sucking is perfectly okay.  Needing a little extra practice time is a great reason to meet up with your female scene partner to work on those skills.  But seriously, it’s a very disarming environment where expectations are low and the shared experience means people are less guarded and more friendly with each other.  Are you getting me now??  Here’s a link to list of acting schools in the city: THESPIANS.

Let’s face it, when looking for a soulmate it’s extremely important to find qualities in them that are timeless and impervious to economic forces. Money can go just as easily as it came (as we all learned the past year and a half) but no one can take away the  love of sports! And a girl that will curl up on the couch with me on a Sunday in the Fall, with our two mugs of herbal tea, crackers and humus… We each have our laptops out as we set our fantasy football lineups? I tell her, “Don’t start Clinton portis! Redskins are playing Pittsburg – that defense is too tough against the run. Go with Lendale White today!” And she’s all like, “What are you gonna do about your quarterback situation? I told you not to draft old man Kurt Warner. Too susceptible to injury, baby!” Well there’s someone I can totally grow old with…

So with no further ado, cue the horns: “duh duh duh duuhhhhh! Presenting the Top Five Cities to Find Chicks that Love Sports!”

City Number 5: Green Bay Wisconsin
Come Sunday I don’t think there’s a single girl in the city of Green Bay that’s not glued to the television following the Packers. In a city that eats and breaths football and has, innarguably, the richest history in the game,  the ladies are simply following suit.  An added bonus: these girls have mastered the art of keeping their men warm in and around that all-too-famous “frozen tundra”. And finally, he’s been such a media embarrassment, you no longer have to even worry about losing your Green Bay girl to former quarterback Brett Favre!

City Number 4: Philadelphia
Brotherly Love? I’m talking SISTERLY LOVE! That’s right, one of the biggest sports towns in the nation is home of multiple championships in the sports of Football, Hockey, and let’s not forget the acclaim owed to the recent 2008 Phillies.  This town is sports nuts and, unlike Football-centric cities  Green Bay and Buffalo NY, Philadelphia runs the entire sports gamut.  And I’ll take a girl that can chug a brew and mutilate a cheesesteak as we argue over the fact that Ben Roethlesberger has the worst offensive line in the history of any Superbowl team and Arizona shoulda totally won that game!

City Number 3: Cleveland
Something must be said for a city that, despite such an extensive history of LOSS, has one of the most undaunted, religious, and dedicated fan bases in all of sports. From the lowly Browns (aka “Frowns”), and Indians, to the most recent, “we can make it to the Championship but can’t win it” Cavaliers, these poor fans have truly truly suffered.  So when we talk about the female sports of Cleveland, Ohio we are talking about a group of girls that have one of the most necessary qualities we want in a girlfriend:  faithful. We need a girl that will stick by us through the high’s and low’s. And although one can easily a find a girl that will stay by your side when you’re winning, how many of us can say she’ll still paint her face for us when we’re fat, bald slobs sitting on the couch, burping, and watching sports all day?

City Number 2: Chicago

Did you know that a Chicago Cubs fan made headlines last week when he threw a beer on the head of an opposing team’s outfielder as he attempted to catch a fly ball (video here).  This isn’t the first time a Cub’s fan has aggressively interfered with gameplay (as they all know too well, unfortunately). Why do things like this happen again and again at Wrigley Field? Because Chicago fans are crazy in love with their teams. And there’s a lot of them: Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, Cubs, White Sox – all of which (w/the exception of the Cubs) have recent multiple championships. Is it any wonder their fans are intense? It’s a risk to take with the female’s, I’ll admit. I mean you want a girl that loves you on a crazy level, but you don’t want a girl that loves you so much she’ll throw a beer at you for looking at another girl…. Or kill you if you threaten to leave her.

City Number 1: Boston
According to a 2005 Boston Globe article, 77% of Boston are women are Red Sox fans, the highest baseball fan percentage in the entire country. Since then another World Championship can have only increased this percentage. In football the numbers almost equally staggering with a reported 63% or Boston area women identifying themselves as Patriots fans. The article also sites that, “Female fans have increased so dramatically that the Red Sox’s audience (at Fenway Park) is almost evenly split between men and women, mirroring the regions general population.”  The piece reports further that, “The proliferation of female fans here (in all sports) is unusual compared to the rest of the country. Nationwide, only about 43% of women expressed an interest in Major League Baseball and 42% in the NFL.”  We haven’t even discussed the other sports – both with a wealth of history, following, and championships in the Celtics and Bruins – and yet the stats are staggering.  Boston women, my women (I’m from that area) are, hands down, the biggest sports fans in the country.

So if you’re looking to propose on the jumbotron or have your reception be a tailgating function in the middle of a parking lot, the above cities are where you should go to find that special girl, the girl that will not only NOT complain about your sports fix, but actually join you in the celebration.
