The First Person On Mars Will Likely Be A Woman
Space exploration has come a long way in recent years, especially for women astronauts. Most recently, on October 18th, NASA completed a historic milestone with the first all-women spacewalk. Now, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine says that a woman becoming the first person to walk on Mars is a likely "milestone."
Bridenstine recently spoke to reporters about the future of NASA's space explorations.
"We could very well see the first person on Mars be a woman. I think that could very well be a milestone," said Bridenstine.
Don't get your hopes up quite yet. This particular milestone won't be completed anytime soon. He says that whoever ends up getting the honor to be the first human on Mars is probably too young to even be an astronaut yet. NASA is currently focused on the moon so a Mars landing will most likely not occur until the 2030s. As of now, the first woman is scheduled to walk on the moon in 2024.
"I have a daughter. She is 11 years old, and I want her to see herself in the same position that our current, very diverse astronaut corps currently sees itself, having the opportunity to go to the moon," Bridenstine told Future US Inc.
Just think, if our daughters ever dream of being an astronaut they could end up being the first person to explore Mars! Women in space are truly inspiring.
