Taking Comfort To New Heights: Ukrainian Airline Redesigns Flight Attendant Uniforms
When you think of a flight attendant, you probably think of a woman wearing a tight blouse and skirt. This trope has long since been romanticized in the media, but it makes you wonder how truly comfortable that outfit can be to wear, especially during long flights.
One airline in Ukraine is modernizing the uniforms worn by their flight attendants, and the move is being applauded by people around the world.
Air Travel
When you board a plane, the first person you see is probably a flight attendant. Traditionally, their uniforms are crisp, clean, embody their airline, but they also have a touch of sex appeal, such as tight skirts, high heels, makeup, and hair pulled into a neat bun.
But one airline in Ukrainian is swapping out sexy for comfort, and it's sure to make waves across the aviation industry.
SkyUp Airlines
Back in July, Ukrainian carrier SkyUp Airlines announced that starting in autumn, passengers would be greeted by flight attendants wearing a more modern and comfortable uniform.
"These are clothes for those who are open to new things, those who love travel and life," reads the official press release.
The New Uniforms
The uniforms launch in October and are meant to embody the idea of movement. But what sets them apart?
The new uniforms will include white Nike sneakers, loose-fitting orange suit jackets and trousers, and a sky-blue silk scarf—the latter two are designed by Ukrainian brands. Braids will replace hair in tight buns, and makeup will emulate "sunset-like soft orange and blue, as during sunrises."
Why Now?
Marianna Grigorash, Head of SkyUp Airlines Marketing Department, says that they researched the history and global evolution of flight attendant uniforms beginning in the 1930s, and in addition, the airline collected feedback from flight attendants regarding their uniforms, according to CNN.
With this in mind, it was time for a modern update for the modern woman.
SkyUp Champions
In order to reflect this modern woman, the airline decided an overhaul of their flight attendants' attire was in order—the new uniform is called SkyUp Champions.
"Times have changed, women have changed, so in contrast to the conservative classics, heels, red lipstick, and a bun, a new, more modern and comfortable image of a 'champion' has appeared," adds Grigorash. "Freedom, natural beauty, individuality, no patterns, and sneakers in which everyone 'would like to fly.'"
Thoughts From The Twitterverse
Twitter users are applauding the news of the modernization of these uniforms. People say it's a move that's long overdue because "airplanes are not bars or catwalks."
"The new uniforms for the SkyUp Airlines flight attendants are fire," commented one Twitter user.
