Recently, one Reddit user said that she believes women who claim they "only wear makeup for themselves" are lying, and putting down other women who say they do wear makeup for attention.

The user explains: "I constantly see this come up in memes on Facebook, discussions on Reddit, especially as rebukes to men, generally—but not exclusively. That women do makeup for themselves, not for you. That makeup is a form of self-expression and women wear it for themselves, to the point that this seems to be the only acceptable opinion on why you may want to wear makeup."
She claims that she finds the constant "we only wear it for ourselves" mentality bothersome. She continues: "I tried to figure out why it rubbed me the wrong way for a long time and I realized it's because of two reasons."
Lots Of Women Wear Makeup For Other People, Including Herself
The woman explains that she does wear makeup for herself and for self-expression, but she also acknowledges that she wears it for a number of other reasons that aren't "just for me." She wears it to look pretty on a night out on the town—specifically so people will think she looks good and hopefully can catch the attention of a "potential suitor."
She also wears makeup on dates to look attractive for the other person. She explains: "I wear makeup at work sometimes to look better to my coworkers, despite not being in a makeup-friendly industry."
Women Are Treated Better For It
The woman claims that she's even worn makeup at work on days that she felt like she would be treated better for it.
She continues: "I wear makeup in photos I post online so I can track progress and post cool looks I do as a form of self-expression. I enjoy getting likes and reactions from my photos. Who doesn't?"
Reason Two: Internalized Misogyny
The user explains that she believes that the "I solely do it for myself" crowd really reminds her of the internalized misogyny of women with the "I'm not like other girls" mentality.
The "not like other girls" woman brags and states that she is not like other women as a way to show that she is unique and therefore better than other women. She explains that by never admitting that they wear makeup to look better, these women are being "pick me" girls.
