So when MaciHall1 posted a video on TikTok that showed a person picking out squirming parasites from the salmon they bought from Whole Foods, the internet went crazy.

Many commenters immediately pointed out that finding parasites in fresh fish is very common. In fact, they're in most of the food we eat.
But fear not; all you have to do is freeze the fish and cook it well.

But of course, many commenters were still grossed out by the squirmy parasites being plucked out of the fresh salmon in Maci's video.
Some even swore never to eat fish again.

And while the internet was going crazy over the parasites, Alriiiiiitythen stitched the video to help calm some people's nerves.
And her video has also gone viral, with over 4 million views.

In her video, Alriiiiiitythen said, "it doesn't matter where you get your fish from - Publics, Whole Foods, a local fish market or Walmart,"
"Fish, the especially salmon, have parasites in them a lot of the time."

In another video, she explains that the fish she typically eats, Gafftopsail Catfish, has parasites that are found in small white sacks.
In her video, she calls them Kudoa thyrsites, which are common in many fish.
Commenters Want To Go Vegetarian
While Alriiiiiitythen tried to help calm people's nerves, many of her commenters were still grossed out and were refusing to eat any fish now.
And many were happy to be vegetarian.

Fish markets always say to freeze wild-caught salmon because it kills most of the parasites.
And for you, sushi lovers, don't worry; most sushi places properly prepare salmon before serving it!

Food regulators have made it very clear that most fish have parasites in them.
An article from CBC said, "Data cited by the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control suggests 75% of wild Pacific salmon are infected with a parasite."
